Korean Society of Sociolinguistics Research and Publication Ethics Regulations

Chapter 1: General Provisions

Article 1 (Title)
These regulations shall be referred to as the Sociolinguistic Society of Korea’s Research and Publication Ethics Regulations (hereinafter referred to as "Regulations").

Article 2 (Purpose)
These Regulations aim to prevent research and publication misconduct and to establish fair and standardized procedures for addressing such misconduct, in accordance with the bylaws of the Sociolinguistic Society of Korea (hereinafter referred to as "the Society").

Article 3 (Subjects of Regulations)
These Regulations apply to all members of the Society and to all researchers who submit manuscripts to or review manuscripts for the journal published by the Society.

Article 4 (Scope of Regulations)

These Regulations cover all research activities associated with the Society, including submission, publication, and review of papers in the Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea (SJK), presentations at academic conferences, research-related publications, and scholarly awards.

Article 5 (Pledge of Compliance)
All members of the Society shall be deemed to have pledged to comply with these Regulations from the effective date.

Chapter 2: Research Ethics

Article 6 (Author Responsibility)
The designated author shall bear full responsibility for the submitted manuscript, and co-authors shall share joint responsibility.

Article 7 (Authorship Order)
In manuscripts or other publications with multiple authors or translators, the order of names shall in principle reflect the degree of contribution to the research.

Article 8 (Prohibition of Fabrication, Falsification, and Plagiarism)
1. All instances of fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism during the research or reporting process shall be regarded as misconduct and are subject to investigation by the Research and Publication Ethics Committee (hereinafter referred to as "the Committee").
2. Fabrication refers to creating false data or results and reporting them as if they were real. Falsification refers to manipulating materials, equipment, processes, or selectively omitting or altering data or results. Plagiarism refers to using one’s own or others’ research content, results, ideas, or terminology without proper attribution.

Article 9 (Prohibition of Duplicate Submission and Publication)
Duplicate submission or publication is prohibited and subject to the Committee review in the following cases:
1. Submission of a manuscript that is already scheduled for publication or has been published elsewhere.
2. Republishing a paper published in SJK in another journal without prior consent from the Society.
3. Partial publication of an unpublished thesis is allowed only with proper citation; previously published theses may be received only if significant new findings are included in the manuscript.

Article 10 (Prior Consent for Secondary Publication)
1. To publish a paper published in SJK elsewhere, prior consent from the Society must be obtained.
2. Authors must provide detailed information about the intended publication to the Editorial Board and confirm that it does not constitute duplicate or secondary publication. The new publication must clearly indicate that the paper was first published in SJK.

Chapter 3: Publication Ethics

Article 11 (Editorial Responsibility)
The Editorial Board shall ensure that all submitted manuscripts fully comply with the publication ethics regulations.

Article 12 (Principle of Fairness)
The Editorial Board shall prioritize the academic quality of manuscripts and shall not discriminate based on the author’s race, gender, age, institutional affiliation, or other backgrounds.

Article 13 (Reviewer Assignment)
The Editorial Board shall assign reviewers who possess appropriate expertise and impartiality. Reviewers with close personal relationships or adversarial relations with author(s) must not be appointed.

Article 14 (Confidentiality of Authors and Reviewers)
The Editorial Board shall not disclose the identity or any identifiable information of author(s) until the decision on publication is finalized and communicated. The identities of reviewers and details of the review process shall remain confidential without time limitation.

Article 15 (Fair Review Process)
Reviewers shall evaluate manuscripts fairly and in good faith, in accordance with the Society’s review guidelines, and shall submit their evaluations to the Editor-in-Chief within the designated timeframe.

Article 16 (Clarity of Revision Requests)
Reviewers shall respect the academic backgrounds of the authors and, where revisions are necessary, shall clearly and specifically state the reasons. All revision requests shall be communicated to the author(s) through the Editorial Board.

Article 17 (Confidentiality)
Reviewers shall not disclose or cite the content of the manuscript before its official publication without the author’s consent. Manuscripts with ‘reject’ decision must not be disclosed or cited.

Chapter 4: Research and Publication Ethics Committee

Article 18 (Composition of the Committee)
The Committee shall consist of one Chairperson and four members. Among the four members, the Vice President for General Affairs and the Vice President for Research shall serve ex officio.
The Chairperson and the remaining two members shall be appointed by agreement among the Society’s President and the three Vice Presidents.

Article 19 (Term of Office)
The term of office for the Chairperson and Committee members shall be two years.

Article 20 (Committee Responsibilities)
The Committee shall oversee all matters related to research and publication ethics and shall be responsible for investigating and addressing matters related to research misconduct.

Article 21 (Committee Meetings)
1. Committee meetings may be convened at the request from the Chairperson or three Committee members.
2. A decision on any violation shall require the attendance of at least two-thirds of the Committee and approval by at least two-thirds of those present.

Article 22 (Types of Violations)
The following cases may be referred to the Committee for review:
1. Duplicate submission of author(s)’s own manuscript.
2. Unauthorized duplicate publication of author(s)’s own manuscript.
3. Presenting others’ research findings in whole or in part as author(s)’s own.
4. Fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism of author(s)’s own or others’ research findings.
5. Listing as author(s) on research they did not participate in.
6. Other instances of research misconduct.

Article 23 (Review Procedure)
1. When a violation is reported, the Committee shall collect and investigate relevant materials (e.g., whistleblowers, respondents, reviewers, witnesses, evidence) within 30 days.
2. The respondent shall be given an opportunity to explain and must actively cooperate with the investigation.
3. After completing its review, the Committee shall report the results to the Executive Board and recommend appropriate disciplinary action if a violation is confirmed.
4. Until the final decision is made by the Executive Board, the identities of the whistleblower and respondents and details of the investigation shall remain confidential unless disclosure is deemed necessary for the public interest.
5. If the Committee recommends disciplinary action, the President shall convene the Executive Board to finalize the decision and notify the concerned member. Depending on the severity, the violation may be disclosed via the Society’s newsletter or website.

Article 24 (Reporting of Investigation Results)
The Committee shall submit a report to the Executive Board containing the following:
1. A detailed description of the misconduct.
2. The Committee’s investigative process.
3. The conclusion and supporting evidence.
4. The respondents’ explanation.
5. Any disciplinary action to be taken.

Article 25 (Disciplinary Action)
1. If an accepted or published manuscript is later found to violate ethical regulations, the Committee may revoke its publication and prohibit the author(s)’ submission to the journal for the next three years.
2. In addition to the Committee’s decision, the Executive Board may impose further disciplinary measures, such as warnings, public apologies, suspension or termination of membership, or disqualification from listing the paper as a research output with the National Research Foundation of Korea.

Article 26 (Record Retention)
Records related to the investigation shall be retained by the Chairperson of the Research and Publication Ethics Committee for five years from the date of resolution.

Chapter 5: Supplementary Provisions

Article 27 (Amendments to the Regulations)
Amendments to these Regulations may be proposed with the consent of at least three members of the Committee or Editorial Board. Amendments shall require approval by two-thirds of the Committee and final consent from the Executive Board.

Article 28 (Automatic Pledge for Amendments)
Upon revision, all members shall be deemed to have pledged compliance with the amended Regulations without further procedures.

Article 29 (Matters Not Specified)
Any matters not specified in these Regulations shall be determined by the Executive Board.

Addenda

1. These Regulations shall take effect on December 21, 2007.
2. The amended Regulations shall take effect on March 31, 2015.
3. The amended Regulations shall take effect on April 10, 2025.
